References To Ares In Modern Culture

Ares is featured as a character in many novels and comics, usually as not exactly the nicest guy in the world, and most frequently as the antagonist. In the video game God of War, Ares is the game’s main villain. In the game, Kratos is a warrior fighting under Ares and he is betrayed later by Ares, who forces him to kill his wife and daughter. As the two go at it, and fight throughout the game, eventually Kratos wins and becomes the new god of war. Ares is also featured in the Marvel comics series The Avengers, as both “a Wolverine and a Thor”; he has the killing power as well as the strength of both. As well as also being in the Marvel comic Hercules, Ares plays the role of the main antagonist in that medium as well.

In Xena: Warrior Princess, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, as well as Young Hercules, Ares also makes frequent appearances in all three series. Kevin Smith is the actor who played Ares, who was sometimes portrayed as a villain, and other times an anti-hero. Usually, he was not helpful per se, much like an interferer, at other times he would give some small advice. He also had a love interest for Xena, although it was suspected that she was his daughter. Ares is also featured in the Hercules Disney movie, although in the movie he doesn’t have a major role, but in the spin-off television show he has more of a recurring role. Jay Thomas is the voice of Ares, who is sometimes in the show having a sort of sub-plot rivalry with his half-sister, the goddess Athena.

There are a series of comics in Korea, or South Korea featuring Ares; their comics are sort of a type of manga, Japanese comics, but are instead called “manhwa.” DC Comics also have an Ares villain as the main antagonist of the heroine character Wonder Woman. Ares was also featured in the Justice League Unlimited animated television series; although he was only in one show, “Hawk and Dove.” Also, some are inclined to think that in Game Workshop’s miniature war game settings, the character Khorne who appears in Warhammer Fantasy Battle and the Dark Millennium is Ares. Or at least patterned to be exactly like him in all but name.
